Home-made tempe

Home-made tempe 05

Here are some pics from kucingputi of a small-scale tempe producer…

Tempe is fermented soybean cake –a Wikipedia entry about it can be found here. And I don’t know why it’s spelled “tempeh” in English. It sounds so wankerish… :p

Tempe is a staple in the Indonesian menu, most notably in Java, where it originated. We can simply fry tempe and eat it with some rice (and some sambel or chili paste would make it even better :p)

Our favorite, however, is tempe mendoan. This is a unique variety of fried tempe, hailing from the Banyumas regency in the western part of the Central Java province (whose people also have a unique dialect of the Javanese language, known as Banyumasan).

Simply put, tempe mendoan is tempe that is thinly sliced, dipped into a batter of wheat and rice flour and some other spices (garlic and leek, I think), then dipped for just the right amount of time in very hot cooking oil… until it’s perfectly “medium rare” (in steak-speak). Perfectly, coz that’s how genuine tempe mendoan should be, and not like the ordinary thinly-sliced-as-well, but just-wheat-flour-battered and well-fried tempe, which try to pass off as tempe mendoan.

Eat some tempe mendoan while they’re still hot, with a cup of freshly-brewed Java/Bali/Aceh/Toraja coffee (your pick from among the 4 finest coffee beans in Indonesia), during a cold rainy day… and you have yourself your own small private heaven… :p

Well, anyway… Enjoy the pics… (Sorry, just the pics for now, as kucingputi is a bit preoccupied at the moment. But do stay tuned for more of her wonderful writings to come.) »

‘Ra ndhuwe manuk sing iso ngoceh

Burung Perkutut (from http://www.geocities.com/howperkutut/)

What do you get when you come across some news about Indonesia’s presidential election, a Beatles song, and my recent interest in the Javanese language? This post, I guess :))

And Your Bird Can Sing
–The Beatles

You tell me that you’ve got
everything you want
And your bird can sing
But you don’t get me,
you don’t get me…

You say you’ve seen
seven wonders
and your bird is green
But you can’t see me,
you can’t see me…

When your prized possessions
start to weigh you down
Look in my direction,
I’ll be round,
I’ll be round…

When your bird is broken
will it bring you down
You may be awoken,
I’ll be round,
I’ll be round…

You tell me that you’ve heard
every sound there is
And your bird can swing
But you can’t hear me,
you can’t hear me…

Lan Manukmu Iso Ngoceh
–The Beatles

Jaremu wis ndhuwe kabeh
sing mbok arep
Lan manukmu ‘so ngoceh
Ning aku ‘ra dingerte’no,
aku ‘ra dingerte’no…

Jaremu wis ndheleng
Borobudur
Lan manukmu ijo
Ning aku ‘ra didheleng,
aku ‘ra didheleng…

Yen artha dunyamu
wis kabotan
Noleho nang aku,
aku ning kene,
aku ning kene…

Yen manukmu wis ceklek
lan nguciwa’no
Kowe bakal rumangsa,
aku ning kene,
aku ning kene…

Jaremu wis krungu
kabeh swara
lan manukmu ‘so joget
ning aku ‘ra dikrungo’ne,
aku ‘ra dikrungo’ne…

The translation above is actually courtesy of kucingputi, who’s far better in Javanese than I’ll ever be… :p

I just helped a bit in matching the flow and context of the original melody and lyrics with the translated words, which turned out to be quite difficult, so we’re accepting any comments and suggestions, possibly from musicians who are fluent in Javanese… :p

But hope you enjoy it anyway… :p

UPDATE: A friend (who I know is posing by the name manux) suggested the word “ceklek” in place of “patah” for translating the line “When your bird is broken”. Done. Thanks, mate!

As for what the heck the context behind this weird post was… :)) »

Pemilu 2009: Act 2, TGIO

2009.07.09 23:28

Pemilu 2009

(This is Part II of my rantings on Indonesia’s 2009 General Elections. This time it’s about the presidential elections. Part I –on the legislative elections– is here.)

If the quick count results are indeed to be any indicator of the upcoming official tally, then Indonesia has a new Vice President: Boediono

The President? Meh… Same old face: SBY …with the same old faces (just pretending to be new and ‘reformed’ ones) of ass-kissing opportunists each with their own interests whoring all around him. Like flies being attracted to a heap of trash.

Well, anyway… TGIO… Thank goodness it’s over…

With preliminary tally results showing SBY-Boediono garnering more than half of the votes, looks like they’ve secured the 2009-2014 presidential term in just one round of voting. Again, thank goodness for that, coz another round of all this election charade is just too much… »

Newsbag

Newsbag

I think this is quite a good idea…

Printing newspapers as grocery bags.

(from EnglishRussia.com)

Though it could’ve been better if the bags were paper bags, rather than plastic ones, so that they could be recycled afterwards…

Newspapers today in their physical form are sometimes a redundant use of paper anyway, as more and more people get their daily news from paperless broadcast and online means.

At least with the “newsbag”, we’d already be optimizing our use of freshly-printed newspapers as a bag to carry our stuff with. And upon their discarding, we can then reuse or recycle them.

(I mention “reuse”, because at least of which I know of in Indonesia, old newspapers are sometimes used again as food wrappers, rather than in the ordinary “recycle” sense of being turned into pulp and used to make paper again.)

What is that?

I just received this video clip in an email forwarded by a friend…

I think it’s a nice, touching, feel-good clip, so I’m linking it here. Enjoy…

Air New Zealand, FUNNY

2009.07.05 12:26

Air NZ, FUNNY! :))

Now this is what I call great promo material. Wittily funny.

Hits straight with Air New Zealand‘s tagline for this promo series: they’ve got “nothing to hide“. Hint: Those aren’t real clothes… but body paint :))

The airline has a channel on YouTube for the promo series, and I’ll link to two of them here: the main promo clip, and AirNZ’s “Bare Essentials on Safety” video shown on their flights. (I guess everyone will pay attention now to that important but otherwise boring safety procedure video :p)

Enjoy! (There’s also a “bloopers clip” :p)

Mozilla Firefox 3.5

Mozilla Firefox 3.5

Just a quick one… As you probably have known, the Mozilla Firefox 3.5 web browser has been released. Versions for various languages and platforms can be downloaded here.

So what’s new? Firefox 3.5 is said to be faster with its upgraded rendering engine, and can take on HTML5, the upcoming latest version of the web language standard. (This includes embedded video with just simple tags, without plugins.) Other features of Firefox 3.5 include improved privacy settings, localized browsing, and more dynamic tabbing.

I haven’t tried Firefox 3.5 out myself though, since I’m too lazy to compile it myself from the available tarballs :p Guess I’ll just wait for the updates (which I assume will be available soon) on the Debian and Ubuntu repositories :p

Anyway, prior to the release, Mozilla had some fun showcasing video submissions to promote Firefox 3.5 as one of the fastest browsers around today. Here’s my favorite, which I present here to a friend who is particularly fond of BANJOs :))

Posting singkat aja… Barangkali udah tau, Mozilla Firefox 3.5 udah dirilis.

OK Debian

Musang's Debian desktop screenshot (Click to enlarge)

Having been using Ubuntu “Jaunty” 9.04 for my daily computing needs, I then wondered what ever happened to my Debian install… especially after Debian “Lenny” 5.0 went stable…

(Yeah, I know it’s a bit overkill –Debian? and Ubuntu? together?– but what’s more overkill for me is still having the pre-installed Windows on my laptop though I rarely ever use it anymore :p)

So here it is, folks… would just like to show (off :p) a screenshot of my Debian install. (Just click on the pic above for an even closer view :p)

It’s a Debian “Squeeze” (the “testing” release), with the GNOME desktop theme made similar to the one I’m used to using on my Ubuntu install.

Since the install was initially when Lenny was still in testing (and then I just left it like that, didn’t have time to tweak it further, and then just used my out-of-the-box Ubuntu install instead), I had to do the usual “apt-get update” and “apt-get upgrade” first. Then “apt-get install” the packages I needed. Then manually compile the kernel to better suit my laptop’s hardware (it’s an Asus M56N, btw). Then tweak out some other problems along the way (until I’m satisfied with the way things work… of which I am, now :p).

If I’m not too lazy er busy :p I’ll try to update this post with the details of my install and tweaks. I think it would be useful as well as a self-documentation. Anyway, most of the things to resolve the problems I encountered, I had found on the Internet. Thanks a bunch to the whole community of Debian and Ubuntu and Linux users sharing together their experiences.

For starters, here’s the config file I used to compile the 2.6.26 kernel on my Asus M56N laptop.

OK…

(And as some of you may have noticed, the title of this post is a twist on Radiohead’s “OK Computer” album :p)

Setelah ashyiq pake Ubuntu “Jaunty” 9.04 buat se-hari2, gua jadi mikir2: apa kabar instalan Debian gua yak…? Pan Debian “Lenny” 5.0 sekarang udah stable…?

Trus “apt-get install” package2 yang gua butuhin. Trus compile manual kernel biar lebih cocok sama hardware laptop gua (Asus M56N, btw). Trus utak-atik dikit kalo nemu yang aneh2, sampe kayaknya udah puas deh nih sama instalan-nya… :p

BlankOn Linux 5.0 “Nanggar”

2009.06.17 01:23

BlankOn Linux

Just a flash post…

BlankOn Linux 5.0 “Nanggar” has been released this June 16…

The nickname “Nanggar” means “Hammer” in the Batak language of North Sumatra. (The next release will be called “Ombilin”, in reference to the Minang culture of West Sumatra; while the previous release was nicknamed after the Acehnese word of “Meuligoe”.)

More information about the latest release of this Ubuntu-based distro from Indonesia can be found here (just scroll down the release note page for an English version)… »
