‘Ra ndhuwe manuk sing iso ngoceh

What do you get when you come across some news about Indonesia’s presidential election, a Beatles song, and my recent interest in the Javanese language? This post, I guess :))

And Your Bird Can Sing |
Lan Manukmu Iso Ngoceh |
The translation above is actually courtesy of kucingputi, who’s far better in Javanese than I’ll ever be… :p
I just helped a bit in matching the flow and context of the original melody and lyrics with the translated words, which turned out to be quite difficult, so we’re accepting any comments and suggestions, possibly from musicians who are fluent in Javanese… :p
But hope you enjoy it anyway… :p
UPDATE: A friend (who I know is posing by the name manux) suggested the word “ceklek” in place of “patah” for translating the line “When your bird is broken”. Done. Thanks, mate!
As for what the heck the context behind this weird post was… :))
First of all, I recently came across a news article about the Indonesian presidential election. It’s actually an old piece, of a campaign by vice-presidential candidate Boediono to a bird market.
I however think many found the title of the piece to be quite funny:
Boediono: Saya Tidak Punya Burung (Boediono: I Have No Bird)
…being that “burung” is often used in Indonesian to refer to the male genitalia :p
But rather than becoming another black campaign against Boediono –he had been continuously slayed by such character assassination crap as being called a “neoliberal” and “not Muslim enough”, probably by the same dip-shits whose power ambitions got cut short when SBY ignored their own vice presidential candidate– the article had instead highlighted how decent Boediono is.
I’ll loosely retell it here:
So it goes that during the visit to the bird market, Boediono was approached by (opportunistic?) bird feed sellers to buy off their stock. But rather than doing so in the usual manner of other candidates who just want to show off that they care about small traders and blablabla, Boediono politely declined the offer and simply told the sellers that he “doesn’t have a bird”.
Boediono then queried a bird seller the price of a bird that can sing, to which the seller (opportunistically again?) replied “Rp 2 million”, and to which the reply came as a bit of a surprise for Boediono. He then simply again: “I’ll consider buying when I’ve saved enough money, OK?”
Anyway, the funny article made me think about songs of singing birds :p to which I can only recall The Beatles’ “And Your Bird Can Sing” :p
I then thought about how funny it would be if that Beatles song was sung in Javanese :))
I don’t know why, but I’ve recently become interested in the Javanese language (which is actually the mother tongue of my family, but of which I know little of, since I was mostly raised up using Indonesian and English).
So thus became of the translation… :))
Anyway, here’s a clip of the song from YouTube:
