OK Debian

Having been using Ubuntu “Jaunty” 9.04 for my daily computing needs, I then wondered what ever happened to my Debian install… especially after Debian “Lenny” 5.0 went stable…
(Yeah, I know it’s a bit overkill –Debian? and Ubuntu? together?– but what’s more overkill for me is still having the pre-installed Windows on my laptop though I rarely ever use it anymore :p)
So here it is, folks… would just like to show (off :p) a screenshot of my Debian install. (Just click on the pic above for an even closer view :p)
It’s a Debian “Squeeze” (the “testing” release), with the GNOME desktop theme made similar to the one I’m used to using on my Ubuntu install.
Since the install was initially when Lenny was still in testing (and then I just left it like that, didn’t have time to tweak it further, and then just used my out-of-the-box Ubuntu install instead), I had to do the usual “apt-get update” and “apt-get upgrade” first. Then “apt-get install” the packages I needed. Then manually compile the kernel to better suit my laptop’s hardware (it’s an Asus M56N, btw). Then tweak out some other problems along the way (until I’m satisfied with the way things work… of which I am, now :p).
If I’m not too lazy er busy :p I’ll try to update this post with the details of my install and tweaks. I think it would be useful as well as a self-documentation. Anyway, most of the things to resolve the problems I encountered, I had found on the Internet. Thanks a bunch to the whole community of Debian and Ubuntu and Linux users sharing together their experiences.
For starters, here’s the config file I used to compile the 2.6.26 kernel on my Asus M56N laptop.
OK…
(And as some of you may have noticed, the title of this post is a twist on Radiohead’s “OK Computer” album :p)
Setelah ashyiq pake Ubuntu “Jaunty” 9.04 buat se-hari2, gua jadi mikir2: apa kabar instalan Debian gua yak…? Pan Debian “Lenny” 5.0 sekarang udah stable…?
Trus “apt-get install” package2 yang gua butuhin. Trus compile manual kernel biar lebih cocok sama hardware laptop gua (Asus M56N, btw). Trus utak-atik dikit kalo nemu yang aneh2, sampe kayaknya udah puas deh nih sama instalan-nya… :p
