Anwar Nasution

For those who don’t know, Anwar Nasution is the head of Indonesia’s Supreme Audit Agency (Badan Pemeriksa Keuangan, or BPK). He used to be senior deputy governor of Bank Indonesia –that’s the number-two guy at Indonesia’s central bank.

He’s known for his outspoken words, and here are among his latest, which I find quite hilarious for being so up-front-to-your-faces :))

The following quotes are taken from several Detik.com articles. Anwar’s pic is from Kompas.com.

The context is Anwar giving a press conference for BPK’s annual audit on the budget reports of state ministries and agencies. In the last quote, there’s also a cynical take about the dumb and obviously politicized “neoliberal vs grassroots economy” debate which has recently occured during the ongoing presidential race.

“Departemen Agama juga walah-walah, hanya doa saja. Jangan hanya doa saja tapi juga berusaha agar diperbaiki laporan keuangannya.”

(The Ministry of Religious Affairs is also like… tsk, tsk! Just praying. Don’t just pray, but improve your budget report.)

“Integritas bukan hanya pake jilbab dan sorban. Banyak anggota DPR yang dari partai Islam yang korupsi.”

(Integrity is not measured just by wearing head-scarves and turbans. Many House of Representatives members coming from Islamic parties are corrupt.)

“Para calon-calon pemimpin jangan hanya bicara soal ekonomi kerakyatan, tidak ada gunanya berpidato-pidato tapi jadi garong terus, ini yang perlu diperbaiki.”

(Those running to become leaders of this country: Don’t just talk about ‘grassroots economy’. There’s no use for lengthy speeches when you’re still stealing. That’s what’s more important to fix.)
